ADA Sign Placement Guide by Door Type (2025 Edition)
Sign Installation Guide – Based on Door Type
Tools You’ll Need
- Measuring tape
- Level
- Pencil or masking tape
- Mounting tape, silicone adhesive, or screws
1. Single Door (with wall space next to latch side)
Where to Install:
Place sign on the wall next to the latch side of the door.
Mounting Height:
- Bottom of tactile text: 48 inches min from the floor
- Top of tactile text: 60 inches max from the floor
- Ideal: Center the text at 54 inches above finished floor
Do NOT install on the door itself unless no wall space is available.
2. Double Doors (only one door is active)
Where to Install:
Install on the wall next to the active leaf’s latch side.
Mounting Height:
Same as above — tactile characters between 48–60 inches from the floor.
3. Double Doors (both doors active, no adjacent wall)
Where to Install:
Mount directly on the right-hand door leaf, if both doors are active.
Ensure the sign is permanently fixed and placed at correct height.
4. Doors with No Wall Space on Latch Side
Where to Install:
- If the push side of the door does NOT have a closer and does NOT latch, mount sign there.
- If it does have a closer or latch, place the sign on the nearest adjacent wall to the latch side.
5. Inset Doors or Doorways in Alcoves
Where to Install:
Mount the sign on the side wall of the alcove, closest to the latch side.
Make sure there is clear floor space for approach and readability.
6. Doors That Swing Out Into a Hallway
Where to Install:
Place the sign on the wall next to the latch side, at least 18 inches away from the swing arc of the door.
7. Sliding or Pocket Doors
Where to Install:
Install on the wall adjacent to the latch side of the sliding door.
Use the standard height: 48 to 60 inches from the floor to tactile characters.
8. Glass Doors
Where to Install:
If a wall exists, mount on the adjacent wall near latch side.
If no wall is available, mount on the door frame or a fixed panel (non-glass) beside the door, following height guidelines.
